How Does Climate Change Impact the Arctic Fox?

Sea-ice habitat provides important winter food resources for Arctic foxes, especially in low lemming years, thus the loss of sea-ice foraging grounds is likely to result in lower winter survival and reproductive success for Arctic foxes.

Next, because Arctic foxes rely heavily on lemmings for food, climate change impacts on lemmings can have profound effects on foxes. And lastly, the Arctic fox has a fierce competitor— the red fox — a dominant, larger-bodied fox that can kill or expel the Arctic fox in areas of overlap. Red foxes historically lived south of the Arctic fox’s tundra habitat. However, red foxes have been moving northward at the same time that Arctic foxes have been retreating from the southern edge of the tundra. Climate change appears to be a leading factor driving the northward movement of the red fox.

About This Fundraiser

50% of fundraiser proceeds will go towards the Center for Biological Diversity and World Wildlife Fund, two organizations working hard to protect all manner of animals across the world, from land to sea to sky. As an artist, animal lover, land steward, and global citizen, it’s nearly impossible for me to separate my desire to create images—whether through a drawing or a painting—from my desire to advocate for the things I hold dearest to my heart. Things like this. They are so very much one in the same to me. So with this purchase, you support two things—the arts and the survival of our planetary home. Which really, what is one without the other?

About Center for Biological Diversity:

We believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

About World Wildlife Fund:

For 60 years, WWF has worked to help people and nature thrive. As the world’s leading conservation organization, WWF works in nearly 100 countries. At every level, we collaborate with people around the world to develop and deliver innovative solutions that protect communities, wildlife, and the places in which they live.

WWF works to help local communities conserve the natural resources they depend upon; transform markets and policies toward sustainability; and protect and restore species and their habitats. Our efforts ensure that the value of nature is reflected in decision-making from a local to a global scale. WWF connects cutting-edge conservation science with the collective power of our partners in the field, more than one million supporters in the United States and five million globally, as well as partnerships with communities, companies, and governments.
