How Does Climate Change Affect The California Sea Lion?
Disoriented and sometimes convulsing sea lions have been showing up on beaches across the Central Coast. It has become an annual occurrence with warming seas and algal blooms. At The Marine Mammal Center is Sausalito, just north of San Francisco, year-round you’ll find a variety of marine mammals receiving treatment. And these days you’ll probably also find sea lions who are suffering from domoic acid poisoning, a condition that if left untreated, could cause permanent brain damage and death.
The condition is most commonly caused by certain algal blooms, which produce a toxin known as domoic acid. Algae accumulates in fish that sea lions and other marine animals eat. The toxin then attacks their brains resulting in disorientation and seizures.
About This Fundraiser
As an artist, animal lover, land steward, and global citizen, it’s nearly impossible for me to separate my desire to create images—whether through a drawing or a painting—from my desire to advocate for the things I hold dearest to my heart. Things like this. They are so very much one in the same to me. So with this purchase, you support two things—the arts and the survival of our planetary home. Which really, what is one without the other?
While 50% of the proceeds will help cover shipping, framing, and for the circular paintings, custom matting, the other 50% will go towards the Center for Biological Diversity and World Wildlife Fund, two organizations working hard to protect all manner of animals across the world, from land to sea to sky.
About Center for Biological Diversity:
We believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
About World Wildlife Fund:
For 60 years, WWF has worked to help people and nature thrive. As the world’s leading conservation organization, WWF works in nearly 100 countries. At every level, we collaborate with people around the world to develop and deliver innovative solutions that protect communities, wildlife, and the places in which they live.
WWF works to help local communities conserve the natural resources they depend upon; transform markets and policies toward sustainability; and protect and restore species and their habitats. Our efforts ensure that the value of nature is reflected in decision-making from a local to a global scale. WWF connects cutting-edge conservation science with the collective power of our partners in the field, more than one million supporters in the United States and five million globally, as well as partnerships with communities, companies, and governments.
